Our Richardson Optometrists Diagnose & Treat Thousands of Cases of Farsightedness (Hyperopia) Every Year

Our team of Richardson optometrists at Arnold M. Stokol OD and Associates regularly work with people struggling with vision problems related to hyperopia, more commonly known as farsightedness. It's a common condition that is often confused with other types of refractive errors like astigmatism and nearsightedness (myopia).

What Does it Mean to be Farsighted?

People with farsightedness struggle with seeing objects clearly up close, though their vision can remain intact when looking at objects far away. There are a few possible reasons why this may happen:

  • The eyeball is too short
  • The lens is abnormally shaped
  • The cornea is abnormally shaped

These changes will affect the way light enters the eye. In a person with farsightedness, the light will focus at a point behind the retina (the image-gathering tissue on the inside of the back of the eye). Hyperopia is estimated to occur to about 5 to 10% of the American population and can affect children and adults alike (a related condition is known as presbyopia, otherwise known as age-related farsightedness).

Signs & Symptoms of Hyperopia

The hallmark signs and symptoms of hyperopia is:

  • Blurry vision when looking at close-up objects
  • Frequently squinting or moving the text away from you when trying to read
  • Headaches
  • Eyestrain
  • Eye crossing (strabismus) in young children
