Nearsighted Vision (Myopia) in Richardson, TX

Myopia or nearsightedness is a refractive error of the eye caused by the shape or length of the eye. In nearsightedness, when light enters the eye, the rays of light are focused in front of the retina rather than on the retina itself. Corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses may then be used to push the light rays back to the retina for clear and focused vision.

Man with Nearsighted Vision (Myopia) needs to see an eye doctor.

Who Develops Myopia

Myopia is the most common refractive error. An estimated 41.6 percent of the US population aged from 12-54 years have some degree of myopia. Most people with nearsighted vision start to experience the symptoms of myopia at a young age, which can further increase into teenage and young adulthood, and then typically stabilizes in early adulthood.

Genetics have been implicated in the development of myopia. Another possible cause is the excessive amount of time that people spend in front of electronic screens these days. In the 29 years between 1971 and 2000, the incidence of myopia in the U.S. increased dramatically. Some people blame this on the development and use of home computers and other electronics.

Symptoms of Myopia

The major symptom of myopia is blurred vision at a distance. If you have blurred vision at all distances, you may have a different condition. Patients with myopia can typically see things close-up without a problem, but struggle to see things that are farther away. Other symptoms that may be associated with this condition include headaches and squinting.

Myopia Treatment

Our Richardson optometrists commonly use nearsighted glasses and contact lenses to treat myopia. Some adults choose to pursue laser vision therapy, which reshapes the surface of the eye in order to reduce or eliminate myopia and is permanent.
